Right Wing Shenanigans Or Obfuscation From The Left?

Until yesterday, I’d been blissfully unaware of the collected works of Zaki Hasan.  In fact, I’d been blissfully unaware of Zaki Hasan, a San Francisco filmmaker and co-founder of an outfit called “Mr. Boy Productions”. But my ignorance came to a screeching halt when I stumbled upon his disingenuous hit piece in the Huffington Post entitled The Right Wing’s Sharia Shenanigans.  Zaki’s piece attacks anyone with the temerity to question the self-professed virtues of the “Religion of Peace”.   He says, for example:

“even leaving to one side how a relatively benign concept like Sharia — Islamic jurisprudence — has been transmogrified into the new Face of Evil on the Right, who’s even talking about enacting Sharia in this country? Because I know I’m not, nor is anyone I know, nor is anyone in the media, nor is anyone in politics — but nonetheless, we have to stop it.” (Emphasis mine)

Ah, yes.  The relatively benign” concept of Sharia:

  • Islam commands that drinkers and gamblers should be whipped. Sura 5:90-91.
  • Islam allows husbands to beat their wives. Qur’an, 4:34
  • Islam allows an injured plaintiff to exact legal revenge, physical eye for physical eye. Qur’an, 5:45
  • Islam commands that a male and female thief must have a hand cut off. Qur’an, 5:38
  • Islam commands that highway robbers should be crucified or mutilated. Qur’an, 5:33.  As an alternative, the convicted may have a hand and the opposite foot cut off while being banished from the land instead of crucifixion.
  • Islam commands that Homosexuals be executed. Abdu Dawud no. 447. Burning to death, stoned while against a wall, or stoned and thrown over a cliff.
  • Islam orders unmarried fornicators to be whipped and adulterers to be stoned to death. Qur’an, 24-6
  • Islam orders death for Muslim and possible death for non—Muslim critics of Muhammad and the Quran and even sharia itself.
  • Islam orders apostates to be killed. Sura 9:11-12
  • Islam commands offensive and aggressive and unjust jihad.  People of the Book (Jews and Christians) had three options (Sura 9:29): fight and die; convert and pay a forced ‘charity’ or zakat tax; or keep their Biblical faith and pay a jizya or poll tax. The last two options mean that money flows into the Islamic treasury.

Benign sentences relative to being boiled in oil, but perhaps a bit harsher conceptually than Zaki would have us believe.  As for who is talking about Sharia in America, how about any number of opportunistic barristers charged with defending certain felonious followers of Mohammad, along with a few fearsomely addled trial judges who seem to have forgotten in which country their courtrooms are located:

“In a recently overturned case, a ‘trial judge found as a fact that defendant committed conduct that constituted a sexual assault’ but did not hold the defendant liable because the defendant believed he was exercising his rights over the victim. Fortunately, a New Jersey appellate court reversed the trial judge. But make no mistake about it: this is no isolated incident. We will see more cases here in the United States where others attempt to impose Sharia law, under the guise of First Amendment protections, as a defense against crimes and other civil violations…the trial court allowed the testimony of an Imam to be entered so that his account of Sharia’s standards could supercede the standards set by the New Jersey legislature. This is not just about cultural defenses, which by themselves are not proper under United States law, but about giving up control of the law to a religious code citizens of this country have no control over, a theocratic code world famous for its antidemocratic, sexist nature and its human rights abuses.”

(The Real Impact Of Sharia Law In America)

Zaki’s HuffPo bio indicates a 10-year sojourn in Saudi Arabia, doing what, he does not say.  But, as the kingdom of the Sauds claims sponsorship of an extremely conservative (some would say virulent) version of Islam called Salafi, one can assume that Zaki has at least some small passing knowledge of its tenets, at least enough to know that Sharia is not at all the “benign” Islamic jurisprudence that he says it is.

  4. Get thebfacts straight from a learned scholar says:

To the two commentors from above who used quotes from the Quran and one Ahadith: There are the same laws and punishments mentioned in the Torah, and the Bible (Old and New Testaments). I’d like for you to actually open up these books and posts them. Would it be fair for every Muslim to do what you have done? Yes, but seriously–I think the vast majority of people realize that when you start taking sacred texts out of context AND at the same time apply your own understanding to them, then your distorting the true meaning or message.

You slowly start losing your own value of your Faith and replace it with, “the meaning of this sacred text according to (put your name here).
There can be no substitute to understanding sacred texts by a learned scholar. No substitute.
And to JUDGE other texts without their learned scholar is the same injustice.
We as Muslims, have been always taught from early on to learn Arabic, as it the language of Islam, and to read the Qutan in Arabic first. Reasoning: Its a Holy text revealed in Arabic, so when reciting, one will get annabudance of blessing for each and every pronounciation.

Also, even with the Transliteration in English, one has always been told that the true meaning is lost in translation. And if one wants to learn more about the meaning of the sacred texts, we have always been told time and time again to go to a learned scholar. No substitute.

It just really is down right stupid not to mention irresponsible for commentators like those above who think they can “shed the light” for others by quoting texts out of contexts. I’d like for you to quote the same quotes out of other Holy Texts and see what reaction you’d get. Trying to put your own limited capacity thinking and understanding towards Quranic texts or any other sacred texts will leave you as a person with no faith at all. These are the same people who manipulate sacred texts to their own benefit and agendas. Distort the truth.

You are creating bigotry and hatered amongst peoples and you yourself are no better than terrorists themselves. Terrorists are those people who have no faith, and who highjack
another faith, distort it and use it to fulfill their own sick needs. What needs are you fulfilling by distorting the truth about Islam. Have you consulted a learned Islamic scholar and asked him/her what the context and meaning of certain verses are? Ofcourse not. Seeking the truth means to actually turn to legitamate sources to find the truth. Give it a try. You
might be surprised at what you discover. The same goes for Mr. Bob Mack. Give it a try. Go find yourself a legitimate Islamic scholar and ask away. Oh–but do leave your prejudices and bigotry at the front door.

  5. Jason Riley says:

    Leviticus 20:9
If anyone curses his father or mother, he must be put to death.
20:10 If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife—with the wife of his neighbor—both the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death.
20:13 If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death.

Deuteronomy 22:20-1 If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the girl’s virginity can be found, she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done a disgraceful thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house.

    Exodus 35:2
For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death.

Deuteronomy 7:1-2 When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess and drives out before you many nations . . . then you must destroy them totally. Make no treaty with them, and show them no mercy.

***But, then again, that’s all from the Old Testament. Which was superseded by that “Peaceful” fellow, Jesus Christ.***

    Well, except. . .

“Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household. He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it.” Matthew 10:34-39

    Oops.

  6. 2142 says:

It is true that the Old Testament, the Torah and Quaran hold quite similar verses, however Christians conduct themselves according to the word of Jesus, who lived some 600 years before Muhammad the Profit came along. His special message of brotherly love and the golden rule are especially important to Christians. Jews do not conduct themselves in accordance to all the restraints contained in Leviticus as they too, like the Christians, recognize the civilization of mankind. It is only the Muslims who hold dear to such outdated barbaric practices.
