Missing The Scorpion

Michael Ramirez

“Because we focused on the snake, we missed the scorpion”

–Egyptian Proverb

The Be Sure You’re RIGHT, Then Go Ahead blog has refrained from commenting on the precarious situation in Egypt (and the Middle East in general) primarily because we knew very little about it (the editorial “we” is always used in such circumstances as it enables me to blame my ignorance on my imaginary colleagues).  Being of cynical mind (and somewhat unsound body), it had occurred to me that there were probably a number of rats lurking in  this particular woodpile on the Nile, a suspicion confirmed in the articles listed below, the largest of the lurkers being the Society of Muslim Brothers, better known as the “Muslim Brotherhood” or “MB”.  The MB was founded in Ismailia, Egypt in 1928, taking as its credo,

“Allah is our objective; the Quran is our constitution, the Prophet is our leader; Jihad is our way; and death for the sake of Allah is the highest of our aspirations.”

The MB is the country’s largest opposition group and, despite a ban on inclusion in the current parliament, is maneuvering for a spot in a new “national unity” government as soon as the detested President Mubarak is dumped.  The goal of the MB is, in accordance with its proclaimed raison d’être, to get a large sandal in the parliamentary door preparatory to kicking it closed for good.  Our own President, either hopelessly naive or purposely disingenuous, has stated that any new Egyptian government

“must include a broad spectrum of Egyptian voices in opposition parties.”

Adding that such a move

“should lead to elections that are free and fair. And it should result in a government that’s not only grounded in democratic principles, but is also responsive to the aspirations of the Egyptian people.”

But since Egypt is 80 to 90% Muslim, logic dictates that the Brotherhood will be the loudest of these voices.  And a belief in “democratic principles” is not part of the MB’s playbook.

Alfred E. Neuman In The Driver’s Seat (Pajamas Media)

The Obama administration has made one little-noticed but  deeply significant policy appointment recently: it has installed Alfred E. Neuman at the center of is decision-making process for the Middle East. “But wait,” you may be saying, “I thought his name was Bruce Riedel, late of the CIA, now advisor to Obama and scholar at the Brookings Institution for Triangulation, Appeasement, and Reasons to Blame America First?”

[…]  In a remarkable piece for the Daily Beast called “Don’t Fear the Muslim Brotherhood,” he assures readers that the Brotherhood has long since renounced violence and may well be the “most reasonable” option for Egypt. To listen to Mr. Riedel-Neuman, you would think that the Muslim Brotherhood was nearly indistinguishable from a Great Society social welfare program: “it has an enormous social-welfare infrastructure that provides cheap education and health care.” It even worked hard, according to Mr. Riedel-Neuman, to assure fair elections in Egypt last time around.

The truth about the Muslim Brotherhood is somewhat — no, it is categorically different. Andrew McCarthy has a tart and illuminating rejoinder at NRO. Entitled “Fear the Muslim Brotherhood,” the essay injects welcome elements of historical context and political reality into the discussion. As Andy shows, Riedel-Neuman’s history “is selective to the point of parody. The Brotherhood did not suddenly become violent (or ‘more violent’) during World War II. It was violent from its origins two decades earlier. This fact — along with Egyptian Islamic society’s deep antipathy toward the West and its attraction to the Nazis’ virulent anti-Semitism — is what gradually beat European powers, especially Britain, into withdrawal.”

The Muslim Brotherhood is the Enemy (Rightside News)

[…] One reason we might be misperceiving the MB as no threat is because a prime source of information about such matters is the Muslim Brotherhood itself.  As the Center for Security Policy’s new, best-selling Team B II report entitled,  Shariah: The Threat to America found:  “It is now public knowledge that nearly every major Muslim organization in the United States is actually controlled by the MB or a derivative organization. Consequently, most of the Muslim-American groups of any prominence in America are now known to be, as a matter of fact, hostile to the United States and its Constitution.”

“Moderate” Qaradawi Defends Hitler and Nuclear Terror

During the past month, Imam Yusuf al-Qaradawi, spiritual guide to the Muslim Brotherhood, has called on Muslims to acquire nuclear weapons “to terrorize their enemies.” He also boycotted an interfaith meeting with Jews on grounds he believes they support murdering Muslims in Palestine, and he additionally said Muslims are permitted to kill Israeli women because they serve in the army.

[…]  According to excerpts of a speech that aired on Al-Jazeera in January 2009, Qaradawi called on Muslims to put Jews in “their place” as Hitler had done, in revenge for Israeli military operations in Gaza several weeks earlier. “Throughout history, Allah has imposed upon the [Jews] people who would punish them for their corruption,” he said. “The last punishment was carried out by Hitler. By means of all the things he did to them – even though they exaggerated this issue – he managed to put them in their place. This was divine punishment for them. Allah willing, the next time will be at the hands of the believers.”

Who Do You Want To Answer The Red Phone When the Dominos Begin To Fall? (LeatherneckM31)

The former worst president in history, Jimmy Carter, gave us an Iran controlled by the the Ayatollah Khomeini after demanding the Shah of Iran step down.

Obama will give us an Egypt run by the Muslim Brotherhood, and will therein complete the major goal of Carter’s second term.

We Have Helped Empower The Muslim Brotherhood (On My Watch)

Countless Egyptians interviewed have dismissed them as a fringe group.  They are not a large number but are well organized.  Make no mistake, they are as totalitarian and dictatorial as that which is being run out of town on a rail this evening.

Egypt Under Siege–Vetting The Muslim Brotherhood (Conservative Examiner)

While the regime of Egyptian President Mubarak has been oppressive to say the least, the group that appears to be waiting in the wings to take control is no better and likely worse.  Every indication points to an even more stringent government under the control of Islamic extremists.

The Muslim Brotherhood is an integral part of the group that is quick to push Mubarak out the door.  While citizens have every right to rebel against oppression, as is so often the case with Middle Eastern nations the demise of a moderating influence provides the impetus for ushering in an even more oppressive regime controlled by individuals who wish to implement Sharia Law and advocate for the Jihad.

Egypt is thus under siege, not primarily from impoverished citizens who wish to be free but from ominous forces that take advantage of their plight for subversive political and religious ends.

Israel Shocked By Obama’s Betrayal Of Mubarak (Reuters)

If Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak is toppled, Israel will lose one of its very few friends in a hostile neighborhood and President Barack Obama will bear a large share of the blame, Israeli pundits said on Monday. Political commentators expressed shock at how the United States as well as its major European allies appeared to be ready to dump a staunch strategic ally of three decades, simply to conform to the current ideology of political correctness.

[…] “The question is, do we think Obama is reliable or not,” said an Israeli official, who declined to be named. “Right now it doesn’t look so. That is a question resonating across the region not just in Israel.” To win popular Arab opinion, Obama was risking America’s status as a superpower and reliable ally.

[…] “Throughout Asia, Africa and South America, leaders are now looking at what is going on between Washington and Cairo. Everyone grasps the message: “America’s word is worthless … America has lost it.”

    Hi Bob

I have felt like you ever since the first news broke; it is best to stay out of it until it becomes clear what is happening there and I will continue to do exactly that.

Something is going to crack out there; that seems obvious. I will however reserve my opinions for later. You must keep us informed and many will probably look in your direction for guidance. But I will stay at home and let them sort it out way up there; my only hope is that the meddling politicians will stay out of it too.

I have not changed my mind about my previous comment but I have re-read everything twice; slowly and pondering every word and nuance.

Would you check and re-check that the lines “must include a broad spectrum of Egyptian voices in opposition parties.”
    Adding that such a move
“should lead to elections that are free and fair. And it should result in a government that’s not only grounded in democratic principles, but is also responsive to the aspirations of the Egyptian people” are in fact Obama’s own words.

If that is the case you guys out there are sitting on the scorpion with the snake ready to strike as well. If those words were said by Obama you have a President that is either insane already, or deep in his breast he embodies both snake and scorpion ready to strike at America.

My heart bleeds for you guys. If you folks of the 50 States don’t get that man out of the White House like in this afternoon it will soon be safer to live in Cairo than where you now reside.

On a whimsical note but serious; something reminded me of Bill Clinton’s “It’s the Economy, Stupid” as I am sure you remember. Well, it’s time to change it to “It’s Obama, Stupid” and with this I wish you luck; you are sure going to need it.

Good Morning Bob and as always you put together a complete and comprehensive post concerning the things we are seeing in the Middle East. The Bible calls this a Cup of Trembling. How well put, being it was written some four thousand years ago.

By the way, those very helpful tips you gave me about a month ago have been a real Blessing and my hit counts have now doubled on average and continue to climb. I can’t thank you enough my friend.

  4. Nonie Darwish, an expert on the Middle East and an expert whom I trust, is warning us that the Muslim Brotherhood is likely to grab the power in Egypt. Nonie also warns us that some 70% of Egyptians support shari’a law.

In my view, the world is going to get something much worse that Mubarak in charge.

Furthermore, these uprisings in the Middle East are going to bring new danger to the West.

Hi AOW. Hope you’re dug out & power restored by now–just in time for the next attack of ‘Global Warming’. I don’t think there’s any doubt that the MB is the scorpion in the Egyptian hallway. Not only that, I believe Obama knows it and approves of it, despite his inane public blathering regarding “democracy”.

  5. J. P. Morgan says:

Excellent piece, Bob. Well researched and places the Egyptian turmoil into clearer context. The scary part is that many can see the coming train wreck (reference the Palestinian elections where to our great surprise, Hamas came out on top) and feel powerless to alter the outcome. Our incompetent Administration bumbles and fumbles and only makes matters worse. But lets face it, our thirst for oil has driven us for years to throw in our lot with strongmen and dictators and monarchs, and that policy inevitably leads to disasters like Iran, and now Egypt.

    • Bob Mack says:

Afternoon, JP. The only rational policy would be for us to exploit our own natural resources, which are more than abundant–shale oil, ANWAR, the gulf, etc–to meet most if not all of our energy needs. But since that would be rational, I’m convinced we’ll never do it.

  6. AFVET says:

Obama is a master at delivering speeches.
He is a consummate failure at reading WTF is going on. (He doesn’t give a damn).
Obama enjoys poking his finger in your eye, and laughing at your response.
He has poked Britain in the eye, publicly.
France is our greatest ally ? Bullsh!t.
He is and has been throughout his ascension to the POTUS, an individual that cannot be touched, or trusted.
We the People have got to teach him and his administration a lesson.
    We will.

    • bydesign001 says:

I agree AFVET. In 2006, I received a telephone call from a former co-worker. She asked me if I thought that I could put my vote behind a junior senator from Chicago, Illinois by the name of Barack Hussein Obama?

When I told her no that I could not and would not, she asked me why? I told her because number 1, he was not born in this country. I would never vote for a Kenyan and # 2, he is a Muslim which is bad for the country; and # 3, he is not what he seems. I stand by my decision.

  7. bydesign001 says:

Bob, Excellent post my friend. You have hit the nail on the head.

Last week as I recuperated and began following the events in Egypt, Muslim Brotherhood was the first thing that came to mind. Even though the Egyptian youth is struggling for democracy (as they view it), it was always in the back of my mind that the Muslim Brotherhood would wait until the right moment to strike, i.e., co-opt the movement, whatever. In any event, before long, they will move and the endgame will be theirs.

Whether Americans want to face it or not, our President is connected to the Muslim Brotherhood. Go back to Rashaad Hassain, http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/atlas_shrugs/2010/02/obamas-hafiz-rashad-hussein-muslim-brotherhood-in-the-white-house-.html.

In 2000, International Islamic scholars gathered in Chicago, Illinois to discuss “Establishing Muslim Brotherhood and Islamic Unity in the United States of America and Abroad” See: http://radioislam.org/noi/is-conf-us.htm. We have been asleep for far too long. Obama’s buddy, Louis Farrakhan attended this conference.

As for the United States, unless we wake up and fast, I fear that we will experience the ultimate betrayal.

    • samhenry says:

Hi there, BD. Your words are wise and your links wondrous. You are such a good source for the history of these movements. Really, the idea of a black brotherhood of Muslims goes back to Elijah Muhammad and the Black Muslims (see C. Eric Lincoln’s book). We have been asleep longer than anyone will admit. We will face it here. Europe is gone already.

      BOB – EXCELLENT post!

      • bydesign001 says:

Good evening Jean, Actually I had a little help that lead me to suspect which is why I suspected Obama all along of being a Muslim or leaning strongly towards Muslims.

I went to a middle school in a Black community during the decentralization movement of public schools in New York. We There were plenty of Black Muslims students, so many in fact, that as a child, I got to know them. They were more than willing to tell their tales of their visits to the mosque. Their leader at the time, Elijaah Muhamaad (sp?). That was around the time that Malcolm X was assassinated by the Black Muslims. Elijaah Muhamaad was preparing Louis Farrakhan who was jealous of Malcolm X (but that’s another tale).

And because the school was located in Ocean Hill Brownsville, many of the teachers were Black Muslim and trust me, they taught us a lot in efforts of indoctrinating us. Being that Black children, for the most part, were raised in the church, their efforts failed.

But I learned enough to make the connection and I am telling you, we are in some deep mess with Obama in the White House.

    • Bob Mack says:

Hi, BD. Glad to see you up & about. Thanks for the links, I’ll be looking at them shortly. Two rules of thumb when I attempt to analyze politics are 1) Cui bono? and 2) If it quacks like a duck…
Regarding events in Egypt, the first fits the MB and the second describes Obama.

  8. “Out of the fire and into the frying pan.”

I am afraid that the tyranny of the majority can be just as bad or even worse than the tyranny of one.

    • Bob Mack says:

Hi Michael. Thanks for stopping by. You’re sure dead right about that. I’m afraid any Egyptian with aspirations to democracy is going to sorely disappointed (if not hung) when this plays out.

For the benefit of my visitors, Michael is the author of The Path To Tyranny: A History Of Free Society’s Descent Into Tyranny, a topic which should be of interest to many of you. The book is available at Amazon, and I have added it to the selections at Bob Mack’s Trading Post.

Western civilization is risking the return of tyranny by increasing the size and scope of government. Throughout history, free societies descended into tyranny when their populations realized they can use the power of government to give themselves benefits at the expense of others. The Path To Tyranny examines how and why each of these free societies descended into tyranny and evaluates the current prospects for the United States.

  9. Bob Mack says:

Alan Caruba writes on Why Islam is Different and Dangerous (Cranky Old Bastards):

The Middle East and Northern African nations in which Islam dominates are in a state of turmoil, seeking to overthrow the despots that have ruled for decades. No matter who is selected to replace them, Islam remains the guiding principle in the lives of their people.

Imagine a religion that divides the world into Dar al Islam, the land of Islam, and Dar al Harb, the land of war.

    They cannot be accommodated.

They negotiate only with the end goal of achieving domination.

They cannot be deterred except through the use of force.

The translation of the word “Islam” is “submission.”

We share the planet with 1.6 billion Muslims and we must either convert them or defeat them.
