What can you say about a guy who’s gone oh for 5 years? That maybe he wasn’t a major leaguer in the first place? That maybe his bush league European style of play was never suited for the American game? That maybe he should’ve stuck to golf? Oh, sure, he was a fan favorite — but they always liked him better at home than on the road. He was flashy. He was braggadocious. He made promises. He thought that stealing bases would bring home the pennant, and the umpires let him get away with things that would’ve gotten lesser lights tossed out of the game. But he was a cancer in the clubhouse. Somebody else always had to knock in the big runs. He failed to run out too many ground balls, and he blamed all his errors on the other team. Eventually, even his cheerleaders in the press box couldn’t cover for him. And now he’s finally hearing the boos.
It’s time to send him to the showers.
