“People sometimes act as though there were no known limits on ‘mine,’ which therefore means there no sure guarantees for ‘yours.'” — Gary North
What this country needs is not, as Thomas R. Marshall once speculated, a good 5 cent cigar; it’s a national purgative. Kudos to Kevin Williamson over at National Review for penning the SOTU rant of the day, a selection of which is presented below:
Great Caesar’s Ghost/Kevin Williamson
The annual State of the Union pageant is a hideous, dispiriting, ugly, monotonous, un-American, un-republican, anti-democratic, dreary, backward, monarchical, retch-inducing, depressing, shameful, crypto-imperial display of official self-aggrandizement and piteous toadying, a black Mass during which every unholy order of teacup totalitarian and cringing courtier gathers under the towering dome of a faux-Roman temple to listen to a speech with no content given by a man with no content, to rise and to be seated as is called for by the order of worship — it is a wonder they have not started genuflecting — with one wretched representative of their number squirreled away in some well-upholstered Washington hidey-hole in order to preserve the illusion that those gathered constitute a special class of humanity without whom we could not live.
It’s worse than the Oscars…
It is worse than the Oscars — and almost as perverse as the Grammies, if such a thing is even possible. Obama mentioned himself 74 times during his skewed description of the Union’s precarious state. He should instead have, like Yogi Berra, acknowledged everyone who made the night necessary. Members of Congress — a body which Obama is rapidly rendering as vestigial as the human tail (an appropriate analogy, considering that the vast majority of representatives are useless asses) — actually applauded when the budding despot openly announced his intention to bypass them and govern by fiat.
The official response to the Obama blather was as tepid as warm milk. Presented by Cathy McMorris Rodgers, a heretofore anonymous mid-Western congresswoman, the Republican vision was applauded by the likes of the Washington Post, which means it has about as much chance of slowing the “progressives” as the Maginot Line did in stopping the Nazi blitzkrieg in 1940. The Germans just went around the French fortifications — which is exactly what Obama intends to do to the Pachyderms in 2014.
